Q.If there are,as people tell me,things I might do to stimulate a pregnancy-for example,"just relaxing,"having sex only during ovulation,adopting a child-why do I need to see a doctor?.

DOCTOR; First, all of those things are popular misconceptions. Many factors can cause infertility, and only a competent physician can determine the source of your own or your husband's infertility.
One of the most popular myths concerning becoming pregnant is that "if you'll just relax and quit worrying about it,you will become pregnant."However, the reason you are not relaxed is that you are not getting pregnant :not the reverse!.Several studies on this subject show that this type of tension almost never inhibits fertility. It is normal for you to feel upset each month when you find out that you are not pregnant and you want to be.This concern will rarely interfere with your chances of becoming pregnant.
There is an exception to this rule, however.Severe emotional and physical stress can cause ovulation to become erratic or to stop.If your ovulation becomes irregular, you will then begin having irregular periods. If that occurs it will lessen your chance of becoming pregnant. If your periods are regular, however, there is no reason to "worry about worrying."
Another myth is that if you adopt a baby, you will become pregnant. There is no increased chance of becoming pregnant after adopting. Researchers have compared childless infertile women with those who have given up hope of pregnancy and have adopted. The incidence of subsequent pregnancy is no greater in the adopting group.
The third myth concerning overcoming infertility is that it is best to avoid having sex until ovulation occurs,so that the man can "save up"his sperm and have a higher sperm count.
Most urologists believe that this may be wrong. When a male goes for several days without intercourse, the stored up sperm start getting "old,"possibly resulting in lessened fertility. One hint for being as fertile as possible is for the wife not to take aspirin-containing products and prostaglandin inhibitors (like Advil) during ovulation time because they can interfere with the release of the egg by the ovary.
Other misconceptions about cures for infertility include undergoing a D&C or taking thyroid medication and/or hormones. One of these treatments may solve an existing infertility problem, but none of them is a universal solution to infertility. These procedures are effective for many patients, but they only treat specific problems. For example, thyroid medication will help a woman become pregnant only if tests show that she has a thyroid problem.
