DOCTOR; Infertility exists in about 15 to 20 percent of marriage. After attempting for one year to conceive, approximately 80 percent of couples will have achieved pregnancy. After eighteen months of attempted conception, that figure increases to approximately 85 percent. Those couples unable to achieve pregnancy after that length of time are considered to have an infertility problem.
Also, men's sperm counts are lower now.Doctor have been observing a gradual decline in sperm counts during the past thirty or forty years. In the early 1990s sperm counts were normally greater than eighty to a hundred million per cc of ejaculate. Now the average male's sperm count is in the range of forty million, and we consider twenty million to be normal.
Lower sperm counts may be due to pollutants in the atmosphere,to diet,or to general lack of,or excessive excessive exercise. It may also mean that because people are delaying their attempts to get pregnant, when they finally come to see a doctor for an infertility problem, the male"s sperm count has already dropped, since age can affect sperm production.
