Q. What is endolymphatic stromal myosis?

DOCTOR;This uterine growth is extremely rare.It is apparently an overgrowth of the connective tissue of the uterus. It produces heavy periods, bleeding between periods, and even bleeding after menopause. It can also produce discomfort in the low pelvic and cause the uterus to enlarge.
If a woman has these symptoms, she would almost always have a D&C done because of the bleeding. After studying the tissue scraped from the uterus, the pathologist would make the diagnosis.
The only treatment for endolymphatic stromal myosis is surgery.A woman must have her uterus, tubes, and ovaries removed.Although endolymphatic stromal myosis is not considered a true malignancy, the growths can spread to other parts of the body, and 10 to 15 percent of the women who have this problem die as a result. Therefore, after a hysterectomy for this condition,a woman should have continued medical observation and care.If there are further signs of the problem, specialized consultation will be necessary.
